Manufacturing of Dental Caps
A cap - (from the German "kappe" – «cover», «cap») – is a special plastic overlay that fits snugly over a row of teeth.
Biocompatible plastics and silicone are used to manufacture dental caps. The manufacturing technologies differ. Caps can also be rigid or elastic. Specific parameters are chosen based on the objectives set.
The following types of caps are distinguished: orthodontic (aligners, removable retainers); whitening caps; orthopedic caps (for protecting the dental arch, in case of bruxism); sports caps.
What are the stages involved in the making of a custom dental cap?
First and foremost, impressions (molds) are taken from both jaws of the patient and sent to the laboratory.
Next, the dental technician casts a plaster model and, using a special device and hypoallergenic polymer blanks, makes the cap.
The creation of a cap takes on average 7-10 days.
How to care for the dental cap.
- After use, rinse the cap with running water;
- For heavy soiling, a toothbrush and toothpaste are used for cleaning;
- Store the cap in a special case to avoid losing it (the cap is either transparent or has a slight tint, depending on the material and the manufacturer, making it easy to lose);
- Protect the cap from mechanical damage and high temperatures;
- If signs of wear are noticed on the cap – it should be replaced.
The approximate lifespan of a dental cap is up to 2-3 years. However, always keep in mind that everything is individual and it's hard to predict the exact lifespan of a cap.
